Passiontide and the Covering of Images
 
Though Holy Week begins next week, the Holy Mother Church anticipates the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of our Lord Jesus Christ – that is, his Passion, Death and Resurrection – by preparing us in a number of ways in anticipation of Holy Week. This Sunday, the Fifth Sunday of Lent is the beginning of what is called “Passiontide” (the suffix ‘-tide’ means ‘time’ or ‘season’). The Sacred Liturgy during these last two weeks of Lent focus more-intensely on foreshadowing the Lord’s Passion, which will be celebrated during Holy Week. The references to the Lord’s Passion are given in both the Lectionary Readings at Mass as well as in her prayers – called the “collects”.
 
The Collect (or Opening Prayer) for this Sunday’s Mass is:

By your help, we beseech you, Lord our God,
may we walk eagerly in that same charity
with which, out of love for the world,
your Son handed himself over to death.

 
This prayer asks the Lord to help us – the Christian faithful – to walk in the Lord’s own footsteps with the same love that he has for us – that love which is echoed in the text from John’s Gospel “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son.” (John 3:16). The Lord Jesus Christ – being the only-begotten Son of the Father is indeed, Love Incarnate, and receives his love for us from the Love of the Father. It is in this Love that the Lord Jesus freely offered himself as a sacrifice for the sake of the redemption of the World and of Humanity. This prayer begs the Lord that we might also walk in that same love as Jesus did – that we might love our heavenly Father with the same Love that the Lord gave his Father – and that we might offer our lives as credible, living witnesses (the Greek word for witness is martyr) of that Love to the world.
 
In addition to the liturgical prayers and readings at Mass, all the crosses around the church building are covered as well as images of the saints. Only the Cross during Good Friday is uncovered during Holy Week, and the rest of the images remain covered until just before the Easter Vigil. The purpose of the covering of these images is to have us focus more intensely upon the prayers of the Sacred Liturgy, listen the lectionary readings of Sacred Scripture, and unite ourselves with our Lord Jesus Christ as he endures his Bloody Passion, his Ignominious Death, and passes through the veil until he receives the Glorious Resurrection from his ever-Loving Father.

Tiempo de Pasión y el Cubrimiento de las Imágenes
 
Aunque la Semana Santa comienza la próxima semana, la Santa Madre Iglesia anticipa la celebración del Misterio Pascual de nuestro Señor Jesucristo —es decir, su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección— preparándonos de diversas maneras para la Semana Santa. Este Domingo, Quinto de Cuaresma, marca el comienzo del llamado "Tiempo de Pasión" (el sufijo "-tide" significa "tiempo" o "temporada"). La Sagrada Liturgia durante estas dos últimas semanas de Cuaresma se centra con mayor intensidad en prefigurar la Pasión del Señor, que se celebrará durante la Semana Santa. Las referencias a la Pasión del Señor se encuentran tanto en las lecturas del Leccionario de la Misa como en las oraciones -llamadas “colectas”.
 
La Oración Colecta (u Oración Inicial) para la Misa de este Domingo es:

Te pedimos, Señor Dios nuestro,
que, con tu ayuda, avancemos animosamente
hacia aquel mismo amor
que movió a tu Hijo a entregarse a la muerte
por la salvación del mundo.

 
Esta oración pide al Señor que nos ayude a nosotros, los fieles Cristianos, a seguir sus huellas con el mismo amor que Él nos tiene, ese amor que se refleja en el texto del Evangelio de Juan: “Tanto amó Dios al mundo que dio a su Hijo Unigénito” (Juan 3,16). El Señor Jesucristo, siendo el Hijo Unigénito del Padre, es en realidad Amor Encarnado, y recibe su amor por nosotros del Amor del Padre. Es en este Amor que el Señor Jesús se ofreció voluntariamente como sacrificio por la redención del mundo y de la humanidad. Esta oración le ruega al Señor que también caminemos en ese mismo amor que Jesús vivió: que amemos a nuestro Padre celestial con el mismo Amor que el Señor dio a su Padre, y que ofrezcamos nuestras vidas como testigos creíbles y vivos (la palabra Griega para testigo es mártir) de ese Amor al mundo.
 
Además de las oraciones y lecturas litúrgicas de la Misa, se cubren todas las cruces que rodean la iglesia, así como las imágenes de los santos. Solo la Cruz del Viernes Santo se descubre durante la Semana Santa, y el resto de las imágenes permanecen cubiertas hasta justo antes de la Vigilia Pascual. El propósito de cubrir estas imágenes es que nos concentremos más intensamente en las oraciones de la Sagrada Liturgia, escuchemos las lecturas del leccionario de la Sagrada Escritura y nos unamos a nuestro Señor Jesucristo mientras sufre su Pasión Sangrienta, su Muerte Ignominiosa y atraviesa el velo hasta recibir la Gloriosa Resurrección de su siempre- Padre Amoroso.
